Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park is Tanzania’s most accessible national park and one of the country’s most diverse safari destinations. Located just 45 minutes from Arusha city and approximately one hour from Kilimanjaro International Airport, the park covers around 552 square kilometers and offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes within a relatively small area. Its scenery ranges from the lush montane forests of Mount Meru and the sparkling Momella Lakes to the dramatic Ngurdoto Crater, often referred to as “Little Ngorongoro.” Unlike many other parks in Tanzania, Arusha National Park is renowned not only for its wildlife but also for its spectacular scenery, making it an ideal destination for travelers beginning or ending their safari adventure.

The park is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife, although it is best known for species that thrive in its forested and mountainous environment. Visitors frequently encounter giraffes, Cape buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, bushbucks, waterbucks, and various antelope species grazing across the open plains. The forests provide sanctuary for blue monkeys and the striking black-and-white colobus monkeys, while the Momella Lakes attract thousands of flamingos, pelicans, herons, kingfishers, and more than 400 bird species throughout the year. Although lions and rhinoceroses are absent, leopards, spotted hyenas, and numerous smaller mammals contribute to the park’s rich biodiversity. The park also serves as the starting point for expeditions climbing Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of Africa’s most rewarding trekking destinations.

Arusha National Park offers experiences that cannot be found in most other Tanzanian parks. It is one of the few places where visitors can enjoy guided walking safaris, allowing close encounters with wildlife while accompanied by an armed ranger. Canoeing safaris on the tranquil Momella Lakes provide a unique opportunity to observe hippos, waterbirds, and giraffes from the water, while the ascent of Mount Meru rewards adventurous travelers with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape. The park can be visited throughout the year, with the dry season from June to October providing excellent wildlife viewing, while the green season offers lush scenery, abundant birdlife, and outstanding photography opportunities. Whether explored as a day trip or included in a longer Northern Circuit itinerary, Arusha National Park provides a peaceful and unforgettable introduction to Tanzania’s remarkable natural beauty.
