Lake Manyara National Park
Nestled at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and ecologically diverse wildlife destinations. Although smaller than many of the country’s national parks, covering approximately 330 square kilometers, it offers an extraordinary variety of habitats within a compact area. Visitors can explore lush groundwater forests, open grasslands, acacia woodlands, hot springs, marshes, and the expansive alkaline lake that gives the park its name. This remarkable diversity creates a rich ecosystem supporting an abundance of wildlife and birdlife, making Lake Manyara an excellent destination for both first-time safari travelers and seasoned wildlife enthusiasts.
Lake Manyara is internationally famous for its legendary tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior that has made the park one of Tanzania’s most distinctive safari destinations. The park also supports large herds of elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, baboons, blue monkeys, bushbucks, and numerous antelope species. The alkaline waters of the lake attract thousands of flamingos during certain times of the year, alongside pelicans, storks, herons, kingfishers, and over 400 recorded bird species. One of the park’s most unique attractions is the Treetop Walkway, an elevated canopy experience that allows visitors to walk through the forest while enjoying spectacular views from above the trees.
Lake Manyara National Park is a year-round destination, with each season offering its own unique charm. During the dry season from June to October, wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather around permanent water sources and vegetation becomes less dense. The green season from November to May transforms the park into a lush paradise with dramatic landscapes, abundant birdlife, and excellent photographic opportunities. Thanks to its convenient location between Arusha and Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara is often the perfect first or last stop on Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. Whether you’re seeking close encounters with elephants, exceptional birdwatching, breathtaking scenery, or a peaceful introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife, Lake Manyara National Park offers an unforgettable safari experience.
