7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route Trek

The 7-Day Machame Route, famously known as the “Whiskey Route,” is the most popular and one of the most scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, excellent acclimatization profile, and high summit success rate, this route guides climbers through an incredible variety of ecosystems, from lush rainforest and heathland to alpine desert and the glacier-covered summit of Uhuru Peak. Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame is a camping route, allowing trekkers to experience the mountain’s wilderness while spending each night beneath the African sky.

The additional acclimatization day makes this itinerary ideal for increasing summit success while allowing time to appreciate Kilimanjaro’s spectacular scenery. Challenging yet rewarding, the Machame Route offers an unforgettable adventure for climbers seeking both stunning landscapes and the ultimate achievement of standing atop Africa’s highest mountain.

Day to Day

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m)

After breakfast, you’ll drive from Moshi to Machame Gate for registration before beginning your ascent through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest. The trail winds beneath towering trees draped with moss, where colorful birds, blue monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys are frequently spotted. As the forest gradually thins, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp, your first overnight stop, surrounded by magnificent views of the mountain’s lower slopes.

Walking Time: 5–7 Hours

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840m)

Today’s trek climbs above the rainforest into the beautiful heath and moorland zone. The landscape opens dramatically, revealing sweeping views across the Shira Plateau and distant Mount Meru. Giant lobelias and unusual alpine vegetation dominate the scenery as you continue ascending toward Shira Camp. This section offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the entire climb while allowing your body to gradually adapt to the increasing altitude.

Walking Time: 5–6 Hours

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower (4,630m) then Descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Today follows the important “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization principle. You ascend steadily across alpine desert terrain to the impressive Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation rising dramatically above the surrounding landscape. After lunch at high altitude, the trail descends into the beautiful Barranco Valley, home to giant senecio plants and one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic campsites. This day significantly improves acclimatization and increases your chances of a successful summit.

Walking Time: 6–8 Hours

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

The day begins with the exciting climb up the famous Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro’s most memorable sections. Although steep in places, the ascent is non-technical and rewards climbers with breathtaking views across the valleys below. After reaching the top, the trail continues across rolling ridges and alpine landscapes before arriving at Karanga Camp. The shorter trekking day allows additional time for rest and acclimatization.

Walking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Today’s journey gradually ascends through barren alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. As vegetation disappears, spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding wilderness unfold. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy an early dinner before resting for a few hours as your guides prepare you for the midnight summit climb.

Walking Time: 3–5 Hours

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) then Descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Around midnight, your summit attempt begins beneath a sky filled with stars. Moving slowly and steadily, you’ll climb to Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable reward, offering panoramic views above the clouds and the remaining glaciers of Kilimanjaro. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Walking Time: 10–14 Hours

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Following breakfast, the final descent takes you through Kilimanjaro’s beautiful rainforest to Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, you’ll receive your official summit certificate before meeting your driver for the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. The journey concludes with unforgettable memories of conquering Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s greatest trekking adventures.

Walking Time: 3–5 Hours
