SIGNATURE MOMENT

Calving plains, moving herds & river crossings

One Journey. Always Moving.

The Great Migration is not a single event and it does not happen in one place. It is a continuous movement of wildebeest, zebra and other grazing animals across the Serengeti ecosystem, shaped by rainfall, fresh grass and the ancient instinct to keep moving.

At different times of year, the experience can look completely different. In the south, the plains fill with newborn calves and intense predator activity. Farther north, the herds gather around the Mara River, where crossings can become some of the most dramatic wildlife moments in Africa.

The beauty of the migration lies in its unpredictability. You follow the rhythm of the wild rather than a fixed schedule.

Different Seasons. Different Stories.

JANUARY – MARCH

Calving Season

The southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains become the heart of the migration. Large herds gather across the short grass, thousands of calves are born and predators become especially active around the concentrations of wildebeest.

APRIL – JUNE

The Journey North

As conditions change, the herds begin moving through the central and western Serengeti. This period can bring dramatic movement, green landscapes and fewer vehicles in some areas.

JULY – OCTOBER

The Northern Crossing Season

The migration reaches the Northern Serengeti and Mara River region. Herds may gather along the riverbanks before crossing, but exact timing is always determined by wildlife movement and conditions.

NOVEMBER – DECEMBER

The Return South

Fresh rains encourage the herds to begin moving back toward the southern plains, renewing the migration cycle once again.

More Than the Crossing

River crossings may be the most famous image associated with the Great Migration, but the experience is much bigger than one dramatic moment.

It is the sight of thousands of animals moving across an open horizon. It is a cheetah watching the edge of a herd, hyenas following mothers with calves or lions waiting quietly in the grass. It is dust, sound, changing weather and the constant feeling that something may happen just beyond the next rise.

We Follow the Wildlife, Not the Clock

A migration safari works best when it remains flexible.

Wild animals do not follow itineraries, and river crossings cannot be scheduled. We use local knowledge, recent wildlife movements and time in the field to decide where to go and when to stay.

With a private vehicle, there is no pressure to leave because another guest wants to move on. If the herds are gathering, we wait. If a predator begins to hunt, we stay. If the light changes, we give the scene time.

That freedom is where the best migration experiences usually begin.

Great Migration, Our Way

We never want the pursuit of a photograph or crossing to come at the expense of the animals themselves.

Vehicles should give wildlife space, avoid blocking natural movement and allow animals to choose their own path. The migration is extraordinary precisely because it is still wild, and our responsibility is to experience it without changing its behaviour.

Sometimes the right decision is to stay farther back.

Sometimes the best photograph comes from waiting.

Follow the movement. Respect the wild.
