6-Day Marangu Route

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro through its most established and traditional route, following a gradual trail from lush rainforest to open moorland, alpine desert and finally the summit of Uhuru Peak. Marangu is unique among Kilimanjaro’s main routes because accommodation is provided in mountain huts rather than tents, giving the climb a very different rhythm.

The route is direct, scenic and steeped in climbing history. Over six days, the landscape changes dramatically as you gain altitude, passing through several ecological zones before the final night ascent toward Africa’s highest point.

detailed itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut

Begin at Marangu Gate with registration before entering Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest. The trail climbs steadily beneath thick vegetation, with opportunities to enjoy the sounds and atmosphere of the lower mountain. Arrive at Mandara Hut for your first night on Kilimanjaro.

Overnight: Mandara Hut

Day 2: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut

Leave the rainforest and continue upward into the heather and moorland zone. The trail opens gradually, revealing wider views of Mawenzi and Kibo as the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Reach Horombo Hut in the afternoon and settle in for the evening.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 3: Horombo Hut → Acclimatization Day

Spend an additional day at Horombo to give your body valuable time to adjust to the altitude. Take a gentle acclimatization walk in the surrounding area before returning to the huts to rest. This slower day helps prepare you for the higher and more demanding stages ahead.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut

Continue across the stark alpine desert toward Kibo Hut, where vegetation becomes increasingly scarce and the mountain feels much more exposed. The steady climb brings you closer to the base of the summit cone. Arrive in the afternoon and rest early in preparation for the overnight summit attempt.

Overnight: Kibo Hut

Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Begin the summit climb during the night, moving slowly through steep volcanic terrain toward Gilman’s Point. Continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, as morning light spreads across the mountain. After celebrating at the summit, descend back past Kibo and continue to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate

Make your final descent through moorland and rainforest toward Marangu Gate. The air becomes warmer and vegetation thickens as you leave the high mountain behind. At the gate, complete the climb and meet your transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.

Climb Ends: Marangu Gate
