8-Day Lemosho Route
Approach Mount Kilimanjaro through one of its most beautiful and rewarding routes. Lemosho begins on the quieter western side of the mountain, moving through rainforest before opening onto the dramatic Shira Plateau and joining the southern circuit beneath Kibo.
With eight days on the mountain, the route offers a gradual ascent, excellent scenery and valuable time for acclimatization. From dense forest and giant heather to alpine desert, glaciers and the final summit push to Uhuru Peak, the landscape changes almost daily as you climb toward the Roof of Africa.

detailed itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp
Begin with registration at Londorossi Gate before continuing to the trailhead on Kilimanjaro’s western side. The first walk takes you through lush montane rainforest, where the trail is shaded by dense vegetation and the mountain still feels wonderfully distant. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp for your first night on Kilimanjaro.
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp
Continue climbing through the forest before emerging into the heather and moorland zone. As the vegetation opens, wider views begin to appear and the immense Shira Plateau gradually comes into view. Reach Shira 1 Camp with time to rest and take in the changing mountain landscape.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Day 3: Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp
Cross the broad Shira Plateau at a steady pace, surrounded by increasingly open alpine scenery. The gentler terrain makes today ideal for settling into the rhythm of the climb while gaining altitude gradually. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp beneath the growing presence of Kibo.
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Day 4: Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
Today is an important acclimatization day as you climb toward Lava Tower before descending again to Barranco. The landscape becomes more rugged and volcanic as you move higher into the alpine desert. Descending to sleep lower helps the body adapt while Barranco Camp delivers one of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic settings.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 6: Karanga → Barafu Camp
Leave Karanga and climb steadily toward Barafu, your final camp before the summit attempt. The surroundings are now stark and alpine, with little vegetation and dramatic views toward Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive early enough to rest, eat and prepare your equipment for the midnight ascent.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 7: Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Begin the summit climb during the night, ascending slowly toward Stella Point as dawn approaches. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where glaciers and vast views reward the effort of the previous days. After celebrating at the summit, descend past Barafu and continue to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 8: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate
Enjoy your final descent through the rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The air becomes warmer and vegetation thicker as you leave the high mountain behind. At the gate, complete the climb and meet your transfer for the journey back to Arusha or Moshi.
Climb Ends: Mweka Gate
