6-Day Ndutu Wildebeest Calving Experience

Where the Great Migration begins again

Between January and March, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains become one of Tanzania’s most remarkable wildlife stages. Thousands of wildebeest gather across the short-grass plains, with newborn calves bringing new energy to the herds and attracting lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators.

This six-day private safari is designed around patient wildlife observation and photography, giving you time to follow the herds, watch natural behaviour unfold and experience the calving season without rushing from sighting to sighting.

Nature follows its own rhythm, so exact calving and wildlife activity varies from year to year.

detailed itinerary

Day 1: arrival at JRO Kilimanjaro Airport

Your journey begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your private safari guide will welcome you and transfer you to your lodge or hotel in Arusha.

The rest of the day is yours to settle in, relax after your journey and prepare for the wilderness ahead. Tomorrow, the road leads toward Ndutu and the heart of the calving season.

Overnight: Arusha

Day 2: Arusha → Ndutu

Into the Southern Serengeti

After breakfast, leave Arusha behind and travel through the beautiful Ngorongoro Highlands toward Ndutu.

As the highlands open into vast plains, the landscape begins to change and the safari truly comes alive. Arrive in Ndutu for your first game drive, searching for migrating wildebeest herds and the predators that follow them.

There is no need to rush. We take the time to watch, photograph and allow each encounter to unfold naturally.

Dinner & Overnight: Ndutu

Day 3-5: Ndutu - Calving Experience, Predator & Prey, Wildlife & Photography

Three Days Among the Herds

These days belong to the wild.

Head onto the Ndutu plains in the soft light of early morning, when conditions are often at their finest for wildlife photography. Spend unhurried time searching for wildebeest mothers and newborn calves, watching herd behaviour and following the changing rhythm of the migration.

Where the herds gather, predators are never far away. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other hunters patrol these plains, creating opportunities to witness the fascinating relationship between predator and prey.

Morning and afternoon game drives allow us to work with the light, animal movement and conditions of each day rather than following a rigid checklist.

Dinner & Overnight: Ndutu

Day 6 – Ndutu → Arusha

One Last Morning in the Wild

Rise early for one final game drive across the Ndutu plains, taking advantage of the morning light and your last opportunities to photograph the wildebeest herds, predators and landscapes of the southern Serengeti.

Later, begin your journey back to Arusha, arriving in the afternoon or evening.

Depending on your onward travel plans, arrangements can also connect you toward Arusha, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar.

Safari Ends: Arusha / onward connection
