12-Day Tanzania Photographic Safari

Tanzania is one of Africa’s great destinations for wildlife photography, combining dramatic landscapes, rich cultures and an extraordinary variety of resident and migratory wildlife. This journey is designed for photographers who value golden light, natural behaviour, patience in the field and the freedom to stay with a sighting when the moment begins to unfold.

From Tarangire’s elephants and baobabs to the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, the big-cat country of the Eastern Serengeti and the migration landscapes of the north, each area brings a different photographic character. The emphasis throughout is on time, observation and positioning, allowing you to photograph wildlife as naturally and respectfully as possible.

detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Kilimanjaro JRO

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and meet your representative for the transfer to Arusha. Settle into your accommodation and take time to relax after your journey. The evening is kept easy, giving you time to prepare for the photographic safari ahead.

Overnight: Arusha

Day 2: Arusha - Tarangire

After breakfast, travel by road to Tarangire National Park and begin exploring immediately. The park’s enormous baobabs, dry riverbeds and large elephant herds create a distinctive photographic environment throughout the year. Spend the day searching for wildlife and compositions that capture both the animals and the character of this beautiful landscape.

Overnight: Tarangire

Day 3: Tarangire National Park

Spend another full day exploring Tarangire, moving through the bushveld and toward the Silale Swamp, where elephants often gather to feed. Predators may also be found around the swamp and surrounding habitats, so the day remains flexible around wildlife activity. Take your time with promising sightings because patience, changing light and animal behaviour often create the strongest photographs.

Overnight: Tarangire

Optional Extra: Night Game Drive – US$120 per person

Day 4: Tarangire - Ngorongoro

Leave Tarangire early and continue into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The landscape changes as you climb into the highlands, entering an area where Maasai communities and wildlife share the same wider ecosystem. Continue toward your lodge on the crater rim and settle in for the night with dramatic views over this remarkable landscape.

Overnight: Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater

Depart early with packed breakfast and lunch before descending onto the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. Explore open grasslands, swamp areas and acacia woodland in search of lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas, flamingos and, with luck, rhino. The concentration of wildlife and dramatic crater walls make this an exceptional location for both wildlife and environmental photography.

Overnight: Ngorongoro

Day 6: Ngorongoro - Serengeti

After breakfast, travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the Serengeti with a packed lunch. The changing scenery makes the journey itself part of the photographic experience as highlands gradually give way to broad open plains. Enter the Serengeti and begin exploring one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife ecosystems.

Overnight: Serengeti

Days 7–8: Eastern Serengeti - Big Cats

Leave camp early with a packed breakfast and dedicate these days to the big-cat landscapes of the Eastern Serengeti. Search for lions, cheetahs and leopards across quieter stretches of wilderness where open plains and rocky areas create strong photographic possibilities. The emphasis is on private, patient game viewing and allowing enough time for behaviour, movement and light to come together naturally.

Overnight: Eastern Serengeti

Day 9: Eastern Serengeti - Northern Serengeti

After breakfast, begin the journey from the Eastern Serengeti toward the northern reaches of the park. Travel through changing scenery of wooded hills, kopjes and broad savannah while continuing to photograph wildlife along the way. In the Northern Serengeti, attention turns toward big cats around rocky outcrops and, during the migration season, the possibility of wildebeest river-crossing activity.

Overnight: Kogatende / Northern Serengeti

Days 10–11: Northern Serengeti

Spend two full days exploring the Northern Serengeti with photography as the priority. Here, strong images often come in layers, combining the animal, its environment and unexpected foreground or background elements within a single frame. Your guide will remain flexible around wildlife movement, light and behaviour so you can stay with promising situations rather than rushing between sightings.

Overnight: Northern Serengeti

Optional Extra: Balloon Safari with champagne breakfast – US$599 per person

Day 12: Departure Day

Begin with an early morning game drive as you make your way toward the airstrip. Use the final hours for any last wildlife encounters and photographs before leaving the Serengeti behind. Fly onward to Arusha, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar depending on your travel arrangements.

Safari Ends: Arusha / Kilimanjaro / Zanzibar
